ARTIST
PROFILE
Valerie A. Miller has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art. She was also educated in the classic tradition, as an apprentice, with the Jeweller's Guild of Boston. Her original designs are exhibited and sold in fine craft galleries throughout the United States. In 1999 her husband, Gregg DiBiaso became her partner in the studio. All their pieces are handmade by Valerie and Gregg at their home studio in Newton, Massachusetts.
I have been a jeweler and designer since 1983, but have been involved with my creative process since long before then. My first job was as a lapidary cutting stones for jewelry. I have also explored texture and shape relationships as a printmaker, weaver, and in mixed media collage. I incorporate all of this experience into my jewelry.
I design at my bench working directly with the metals and stones. I start only with a feeling or unstructured creative thought that develops in response to the materials. I feel all elements should be treated as an integral part of the piece comming together to create something precious. Its important to me that my jewelry works well on the body, that it is comfortable, flattering and an extention of the wearer's personality. I attempt to maintain a classic simplicity and grace even in my more complex pieces.
Gregg DiBiaso has a long history working with metals. Before joining Valerie A. Miller Jewelry in 1999 he worked for over 20 years in the aircraft industry as a welder and machinist. He has previously designed his own line of metal furniture. He is also an avid model ship builder. Gregg has brought with him a new creative energy to the studio.
